Lesson 5: the Canter
Squeeze a little harder and do another zillion things right and suddenly you will canter.

“As carefree as riding a rocking horse as long as you stay on and have the correct lead* and don’t break into a trot and a perfectly collected horse and a perfectly collected you who remembered to shine your boots and have no cares in the...
New Charles Owen!!!
:D so excited. Finally got a new helmet, was going for the IRH ATH SSV or IRH XR9 but instead got the Charles Owen JR8. I was really surprised it was in my price range at $150 brand-new since we all know their prestigious price range. I’ve been wearing it intermittently throughout today to break it in before my next lesson, Friday.

Diagonals*
The diagonal is a concept that has something to do with trotting and posting. It makes no sense and is far too complex to into here, but this is the diagonal essence in a nutshell.
When the horse’s left front (1) and right hind legs go forward (A), you rise (3) and are on the left (c) or outside (B) diagonal, tracking right (D).
Got it?
*Always used with the word...
Dear Horse,
equestriandefinition:
When approaching a jump that is larger then 3 feet, you much actually jump. Crashing through the jump is and never will be an effective way of getting over the jump. Thanks for trying anyways though.
Love, Rider.
Lesson 3: The Walk
sit DEEP in the saddle, take a deep breath, and relax even though you know the ground is far away and all hell could break loose any minute now
give your horse a gentle nudge and ask for the walk
some horses need more nudging then others…
Lesson 4: The Trot
Squeeze a little more, and you trot. You will discover new squeezer muscles!
In the trot, the ground is still far away, only now it’s moving away faster.
First, there is the sitting trot. Much like the Western jog, there should be no air between you and your horse.
Then there is the rising trot, also known as posting—a smoothing out of the ups and downs. Note: This is something...
If the gait you want is the gait you’re getting, you are doing well.
Lesson 2: Giddy Up
The Basics
Gently ask your horse to wake up. (for example, good morning sweetie pie). He’s a horse after all, and he has better things to do.
Give him a little nudge. (Remind him you are his VERY BEST friend).
*TIP: If vultures are circling over head, you need more giddy up.
3. Go ahead—use your leg. (Remind him it’s a beautiful day out there…)
4. Remind him...
Lesson 1: Getting On
Those more experienced call this “mounting.”
Place mounting block beside the horse
Stand on mounting block
Watch horse move
Move block to horse’s new position
Start to mount
….
and when all else fails,
Mount the cowboy way
Flying is learning to throw yourself at the ground and miss.
I'm the Biggest Four Year Old.
So my latest SmartPak order came when I was working at my mom’s office (and my sister dropped it down the stairs and my brother opened it to see if it was broken putting a mark on my mood but nevertheless)…
So I bought a new pair of black Euro Seat schooling breeches from Equine Couture. Low rise, wide waistband, calvary style and subtle embroidered design (black on black)…they...
Hidden Liasons
Seeing this picture makes me think of the young child’s innocence strongly contrasting the large bears dangerous potential. Similarly, I supposed a young child’s innocence being threatened by the rare danger of horseback riding. What do you think?
